For 123 years, Hanover and Great Britain were linked by a single monarch. How were the German Electors able to become kings of an empire in Great Britain? And what effect did this constellation of rulership have on the culture and courtly life of both empires? For the first time, on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the personal union, the Lower Saxony State Exhibition, "The Hanoverians on Britain's Throne 1714–1837" from 17th May to 5th October 2014, will provide fascinating insights into this important era.
Five castles and museums in Hanover and Celle will take a look at this important chapter in European history: more than 900 precious exhibits owned by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be on display. In addition to the central exhibition in the Lower Saxony State Museum Hanover and in the Herrenhausen Palace museum, themed exhibitions in the Wilhelm Busch – Deutsches Museum für Karikatur und Zeichenkunst (The German Museum for Caricature and Graphic Art), the Historisches Museum Hannover and the Residenzmuseum in Celle Castle will explore individual aspects.
