Museums
The SPRENGEL MUSEUM for modern art has the largest collection in the world of the creations from the famous artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
The Kestner-Museum Hanover was established in 1889 and is a museum for applied arts. The name for the museum was taken from the former Hanover residents August Kestner (1777-1853) and his nephew Herrmann Kestner (1810-1890). The art-lover and successful diplomat August Kestner delegated his nephew to handover his substantial art collection to the city of Hanover, so the residents of his hometown could appreciate the beauty of these works of art.
The unique location of the Historische (Historical) Museum also has a close connection with the history of Hanover – situated on the banks of the river Leine where the city was originally established in 1100. Stone remains from the Middle Ages include the half-round “Beginenturm” (tower) and the old city wall that have been effectively integrated into the museum building. Opposite the entrance to the museum are examples of the remaining original city half-timbered houses; close to the “Holzmarkt” you can also discover the reconstructed “Leibnizhaus”. The centrepiece of the museum is the permanent exhibition – 750 years Hanover – from the beginning until present. The history of the princedom Calenberg from 1600 until the end of the kingdom of Hanover in 1866 is also exhibited in the section Regional History.
The Wilhelm-Busch-Museum in the “Georgengarten”, which is a section of the beautiful “Herrenhäuser Gärten” (gardens), displays caricatures and social criticism prints.
Relax and enjoy events amongst the greenery
Hanover has one of the most beautiful baroque gardens in the world. Discover the “Großen Garten” with its Garden Theatre, labyrinth and one of the tallest fountains. The garden was designed with French landscaping influences under the management and coordination of Sophie von der Pfalz. This attraction is one of the best maintained baroque gardens in Europe. An added highlight was the opening of the Niki de Saint Phalle Grotte in May 2003.
The “Berggarten” is not only fascinating because of its unique selection of plants but also for its Rainforest Enclosure. The “Maschsee” (lake) also attracts crowd’s all-year-round for varying activities or festivities. Whether you enjoy an open-air concert or take a leisurely stroll through the city, Hanover has a lot to offer. Festivals such as the “Schützenfest” and “Maschseefest”; the international fireworks competition in the Grossen Garten; concerts in the EXPO Plaza, TUI Arena and on the Park Stage are just some of the activities and events you can enjoy in Hanover.
